+ Who can participate in The Mitzvah Makers?
Any student in grades 6-8 who wants to do a project for his/her bar or bat mitzvah is invited to participate.

+ How much does it cost?
Mitzvah Makers is a free service provided by the Jewish Federation of San Diego County.

+ How long will my project take?
The length of the project is up to you. You can develop a project that involves a single day of hands-on work; or, you can do something more frequently and regularly throughout the year. You can work out the details with the Mitzvah Makers coordinator.

+ What if I already know what kind of project I want to do?
Great! Talk to the Mitzvah Makers coordinator to let her know your ideas. If you need or want any help, we are happy to work out any details or plans with you. All we require is that you work with a 501(c)(3).

+ What if I have no idea about what kind of project to do?
No problem. Simply contact the Mitzvah Makers coordinator to get the ball rolling. We will work with you to design a project that suits your interests and passions.

+ Do I have to raise money?
Not necessarily. Many Mitzvah Makers involve fundraising as one aspect of their project. You can decide what works best for you.

+ What if I want to raise money for an organization but don't know how to fundraise?
We have lots of ideas to help get you started. For example, you could have a bake sale, organize a car wash, put on a talent show, or simply include a letter in your bar or bat mitzvah invitation. You can talk about the details with your parents and the Mitzvah Makers coordinator.

+ Do I have to do my project by myself, or can I do it with a group of my friends?
It is up to you. If you have a group of friends who want to work together on a project -- go for it! We can help you get organized and work out any details.

+ Does my project have to relate to a Jewish cause or agency?
Yes. We recognize that there are many worthwhile and wonderful non-profit causes and agencies. To participate with Mitzvah Makers, you must donate to or work with a Jewish agency as part of your project. That is one of the things that makes our program unique.

+ Does my project have to be with an agency that is part of the Federation family?
No! Mitzvah Makers are encouraged to follow their passions! Find a project that's right for you - any 501c3 non-profit is eligible.

+ What happens to the money I raise?
Federation will direct 100% of the money you raise to the agency that you have designated. If you like, your family and friends can make donations online through your own personal web page on The Mitzvah Makers site.

+ Is there anyone who can help me get my project up and running?
Absolutely! You will receive organizational support, mentoring, and guidance throughout the process from the Mitzvah Makers coordinator, Federation board members and staff, and Mitzvah Makers volunteers.
